Khalaf bin Ahmad Al Habtoor, Founding Chairman of Al Habtoor Group, officially inaugurated the “Ali Mohammed Al Yabhouni Al Dhaheri Drone Lab” at the University of Dubai This state-of-the-art facility is named in honour of the late Dr. Ali Mohammed Al Yabhouni Al Dhaheri, a prominent figure in the design and production of unmanned aircraft, who was responsible for designing the first locally produced drone in the UAE, built to international specifications that rivalled the best in the industry globally.
The new lab is dedicated to advancing research and development in aviation systems, with a specific emphasis on AI-based control systems for fixed-wing drones. This cutting-edge facility will benefit students, researchers, and both governmental and private institutions that aim to implement drone technology in sectors such as logistics and operational efficiency.
During the inauguration, Khalaf Al Habtoor expressed his deep pride in establishing the lab, stating, “The legacy left by my late friend, Dr Ali Al Yabhouni Al Dhaheri, is not merely a technical achievement; it stands as a lasting inspiration for future generations of innovators and scientists across the UAE and the Arab world. This lab represents a significant step toward a future driven by innovation and technological advancement.”
Al Habtoor extended his gratitude to Dubai University and Dr Issa Al Bastaki for their warm reception and for embracing the idea of naming the lab after the brilliant Dr Al Yabhouni Al Dhaheri, one of the distinguished sons of the UAE.
Al Habtoor recalled meeting Dr. Ali about two years ago and was impressed by his ideas, knowledge, and intelligence. He added, "I met him several times and found him to be a true master in his field. He was a scientist unlike any other, having worked with the Russians and proven the competence and brilliance of the Emirati."
Al Habtoor also highlighted Dr Ali's collaboration with the Egyptian government on numerous drone-related research projects, emphasising that "Ali lives on in our hearts, and his achievements are a source of pride for all of us."
Jamal bin Huwaireb, Cultural Advisor to the Government of Dubai, spoke about the importance of drones, expressing his gratitude to Khalaf Al Habtoor and Dr Issa Al Bastaki for their initiative in establishing the new lab. Huwaireb stressed that Dr. Ali Al Yabhouni was instrumental in placing the UAE on the global map in this technological field.
Dr Eesa Al Bastaki, President of the University of Dubai, praised the importance of the lab, noting its role in enhancing the students' research and practical skills, which will prepare them for the future and enable them to develop innovative solutions using drone technologies.
Al Bastaki added, "Dr Al Yabhouni has etched his name into history long before we commemorate his memory today. We will strive to produce research that honours his legacy, and this lab will stand as a symbol for advancement of drone research."
The lab will offer students, particularly those working on graduation projects, an opportunity to apply their innovative ideas and conduct advanced scientific research. This aligns with the UAE’s vision of improving efficiency and reducing energy consumption.
Additionally, the lab aims to forge strategic partnerships with the industrial sector to develop cutting-edge technologies, solidifying the University of Dubai’s position as a leader in technological innovation in the UAE and the region.
This inauguration reflects Al Habtoor’s commitment to advancing scientific and technological progress in the UAE and serves as a tribute to the late Dr Ali Al Yabhouni Al Dhaheri, who significantly contributed enhancing the country's capabilities in drone technology.
